TRADE ADJUSTMENT ASSISTANCE FOR WORKERS (TAA), US DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

The Trade Act of 1974 (19 USC 2271 et seq.), as amended, established Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) to provide assistance to workers in firms hurt by foreign trade. Program benefits include long-term training while receiving income support.

Filing a Petition for Trade Adjustment Assistance with the US Department of Labor (and with the State of Wisconsin) is the first step in qualifying for TAA benefits and assistance. Petitions can be filed by an employer official, and the task force has been informed that Verso is preparing a petition. In Wisconsin TAA is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD); information from DWD is available here.

The Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Program provides assistance to workers who lose their jobs due to foreign competition, including work being moved outside of the United States. The U.S. Department of Labor decides if a company is TAA-eligible. Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) determines individual worker eligibility and provides the program benefits through the state’s job center locations.

The Verso Mill has now been certified for the TAA program. You can view the TAA decision by the US Department of Labor here.

RAPID RESPONSE, US DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

METSA GROUP - COOPERATIVELY OWNED FINNISH FOREST COMPANY

FROM THE WEBSITE: "The sector accounts for over 20 per cent of Finland’s export revenue and it is a major employer, especially in regional areas. In addition to traditional products such as paper, board, pulp, lumber and plywood, the forest industry produces energy, biofuels and bioproducts. With new products such as nanocellulose and textile fiber, the added value can be increased."
