Supports UW-System’s Mitigation Ability

MADISON– Senator Robert Cowles (R-Green Bay) released the following statement supporting the University of Wisconsin-System’s ability to implement spread prevention and mitigation measures related to COVID-19:

“The measures that have been implemented by the UW-System over the past year and that will continue as we begin this year, which are limited only to government property and not applicable on private property, are both reasonable and pivotal in maintaining in-person education and social interactions, which we all should agree benefit our university students most. Further, President Thompson and the Regents believe they’re on firm legal footing as they express authority to run the schools in a way that can best navigate these difficult circumstances.

“I do not support a legal challenge by the State Legislature to UW-System’s COVID-19 mitigation measures. During this ongoing workforce shortage that’s bound to only maintain or intensify, tying the hands of one of our state’s most powerful workforce development tools and driving decisions that could cancel or limit in-person instruction doesn’t seem to be in the best interests of our local communities or business sector.”
