Sen. Johnson Fellowship Program

Wisconsin State Senator LaTonya Johnson offers a Legislative Fellowship program, which is an enriching opportunity for students and recent graduates interested in gaining firsthand experience in legislative offices. Fellows will be provided valuable, hands-on involvement in the political process and a behind-the-scenes look at office operations. Projects will include policy research, constituent relations, communications, and more.

Session Details: The program offers three* sessions each year:

  1. Spring Semester (January to May)
    • Apply Oct. 1 to Oct. 31
  1. Summer (May to August)
    • Apply March 15 to April 15
  1. Fall Semester (September to December)
    • Apply June 15 to July 15

*There is a one-semester limit per fellow

Responsibilities:

  • Fellows will engage in various tasks, such as constituent casework, committee tracking, press monitoring, and legislative research.
  • They will work closely with staff and legislators, attending committee hearings and legislative proceedings.
  • Fellows will have the opportunity to build a personal network in Wisconsin politics and contribute to potential future staff roles within the legislature.

Qualifications:

  • Desire to be engaged in and high-level understanding of the political process.
  • Willingness to ask questions to clarify assignments.
  • Entry-level skills to research and analyze legislative issues and processes.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team setting.
  • High-level organization and time management skills.

Preferred, but not required:

  • Constituent or customer service experience.
  • Enrollment in or attendance at a two or four-year college/university or a vocational/technical school program.

Program Details:

  • Fellows will be expected to work 20 hours a week and will earn $15 an hour.
  • Fellowship positions are limited. Applicants should indicate if they are interested in participating in the unpaid internship program if they are not selected for the fellowship opportunity.
