Representative Melotik Presents Legislative Citation to GHS Auto Shop Teacher Nic Fullington
Today, Representative Paul Melotik and Representative Dan Knodl visited Grafton High School to present Nic Fullington with a legislative citation in recognition of his recent honor as a 2025 Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence winner. Fullington, the school’s automotive technology teacher, received $15,000 for himself and $35,000 for his program. He is one of only 25 public high school skilled trades teachers across the country to earn this award.
This award adds to Fullington’s growing list of accomplishments during his five years with the Grafton School District. His students have earned more than $250,000 in scholarships and tools, won a national SkillsUSA title, and benefited from his commitment to creating meaningful pathways into the skilled trades.
The Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize honors educators who are shaping the next generation of skilled trades professionals. Fullington’s dedication, passion, and impact continue to make a difference in the Grafton community.
Congratulations to Nic on this well-deserved recognition.

Rep. Melotik Honors Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Corporal Michael Schmidt as 2025 First Responder of the Year
On Tuesday, October 14, 2025, during the Wisconsin State Assembly floor session, I was honored to present Corporal Michael Schmidt of the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office as District 22’s First Responder of the Year for his outstanding service and unwavering commitment to public safety.
Corporal Schmidt began his distinguished career with the Sheriff’s Office in March 2007 as a Deputy Sheriff in the Jail Division. During that time, he also served with dedication on the Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT). In August 2009, he transitioned to the Patrol Division as a Patrol Deputy, and in March 2022, he was promoted to Corporal, where he currently serves on first shift. In this leadership role, he steps up as Shift Commander in the absence of a Sergeant, a testament to the trust placed in him by his colleagues and command staff.
But Corporal Schmidt’s contributions extend far beyond his supervisory responsibilities. He serves as the Team Leader for the Ozaukee County Crash Reconstruction Unit, is a key member of the Peer Support and Critical Incident Debrief Teams, and is a certified Taser instructor. As a long-serving Field Training Officer, he has helped shape and mentor the next generation of law enforcement professionals.
Throughout his career, Corporal Schmidt has displayed extraordinary courage, calm, and compassion during the most critical of moments. He has received multiple commendations for lifesaving actions, including administering Narcan to an overdose victim and applying a tourniquet that saved an individual from the catastrophic loss of a limb. These actions reflect the highest ideals of public service.
His dedication to community safety doesn’t stop when his shift ends. Corporal Schmidt also volunteers as a firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician with the Village of Belgium Fire Department. In 2018, his commitment was further recognized when he was named EMT of the Year by the American Legion Melvin Wester Belgium Post 412.
A lifelong resident of Belgium, Wisconsin, Corporal Schmidt has deep roots in the community he serves. He graduated from Cedar Grove-Belgium High School in 1999 and earned his associate’s degree from Milwaukee Area Technical College. He and his wife Amanda are proud parents to two sons.
For more than 18 years, Corporal Schmidt has embodied the core values of the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office: Honor, Integrity, Duty, and Loyalty. He is highly respected by his peers and by the entire community he so faithfully serves.
It is with great pride and deep appreciation that I present this award to Corporal Michael Schmidt for his exemplary service to Ozaukee County. Thank you for your dedication, your courage, and your unwavering commitment to keeping our communities safe.

Rep. Melotik Honors Tom “Mel” Stanton, founder of Mel’s Charities in Cedarburg as a Hometown Hero
On April 22, 2025, Representative Paul Melotik proudly presented the Wisconsin State Assembly Hometown Hero Award to Tom “Mel” Stanton, founder of Mel’s Charities in Cedarburg, in recognition of his exceptional service, leadership, and impact across Ozaukee County.
What began in 1999 as a $350 pig roast has grown into one of the region’s most impactful nonprofits. Guided by the motto “Having Fun, Impacting Lives,” Mel’s Charities has raised nearly $3 million, all staying local to support individuals with disabilities, youth, veterans, and mental health programs in Ozaukee County.
Driven by his energy, humor, and compassion, Tom “Mel” Stanton has turned a grassroots idea into a powerful movement of inclusion, generosity, and community spirit.
“What started as a small, heartfelt gesture has grown into a powerful community institution,” said Representative Paul Melotik. “Mel’s ability to bring people together with joy, purpose, and compassion is what makes the organization so impactful. Whether it’s supporting individuals with disabilities, helping veterans, or uniting neighbors through community events, he continues to lead with heart and vision. Mel’s Village is a bold and exciting step forward, and it’s just one more example of how Tom ‘Mel’ Stanton is changing lives right here in our community. I’m proud to recognize him as our Hometown Hero.”
One of the most ambitious projects Mel’s Charities is leading is Mel’s Village at Gateway, a transformative 35-acre development in Saukville that will serve as a model for inclusive, community-focused living. The project will offer market-rate housing, with 25% of units dedicated to adults with disabilities, alongside job opportunities, retail spaces, a sports academy, and a variety of public amenities including a botanical garden, splash pad, concert bandshell, and hotel. Managed in partnership with Balance, Inc., Mel’s Village is designed to be a place where people of all abilities can live, work, and thrive together.
Mel’s Charities is also known for its dynamic and joyful approach to fundraising. Signature events such as Mel’s Pig Roast, River Run, Shamrock Shenanigans, Pig Scramble, and Melapalooza bring thousands together each year in celebration and support of their mission, proving that fun and generosity can go hand-in-hand.
From its grassroots beginnings to its county-wide impact, Mel’s Charities exemplifies the power of community-led change. Tom “Mel” Stanton’s unwavering dedication has not only raised vital funds but also built lasting connections, inspired hope, and made Ozaukee County a better, more inclusive place for all. Congratulations to Mel and the entire Mel’s Charities team.
State Representative Paul Melotik Honored with Associated Builders and Contractors Building Wisconsin Award
On October 9th, I was thrilled to receive the Associated Builders and Contractors Building Wisconsin award for my efforts to increase enrollment in the skilled construction trades.
ABC estimates that we’ll need about half a million more construction workers soon, based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
Here is a picture from the ceremony, with Roland Gutknecht and Alicia Gutknecht presenting the award at Orly Solutions in Cedarburg.
