I’m writing with an update on recent work in two Senate committees where I serve as Chair of the Senate Committee on Transportation and Local Government and Vice-Chair of the Senate Special Committee on Oversight of the Department of Justice.

This update will cover both committees, but the Oversight Committee is the primary focus because it is examining DOJ’s decision to bring in privately funded “legal fellows” to perform environmental enforcement work inside the Wisconsin Department of Justice. We want to know if that arrangement was handled transparently and in full compliance with Wisconsin law.

The Senate was on the floor and several of my bills moved forward. We advanced a commonsense transparency measure for school athletics and updated Academic Excellence scholarships to better match today’s college costs. My local government streamlining work was on deck too; putting clear time limits on local emergency declarations so boards stay in the driver’s seat.

This week my work centers on keeping communities safe, services accountable, and projects moving. I testified on measures to streamline airport improvements, update coroner and medical-examiner fees so rural investigations remain timely, set clearer timelines for health-care prior authorization, define consequences for serious judicial misconduct, craft a narrow tobacco-bar exemption, and advance a constitutional check on the partial veto.
