Recently, Republicans proposed providing $614 million of state and local money to cover anticipated maintenance of American Family Field through 2050. The State of Wisconsin would provide: $411.7 million, Milwaukee County: $135 million, City of Milwaukee: $67.5 million, and the Brewers would provide $140 million.
Republicans have threatened that they would impeach and remove Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz, elected this April, if she participates in a case related to redistricting.
In Wisconsin, a judicial officer that is impeached by a majority of the Assembly (50 votes) is unable to perform any of their duties until they are judged by the Senate, which convicts with a two-thirds majority (22 votes). This would most likely lead to a situation where Supreme Court Justice Protasiewicz is indefinitely prevented from acting, which could go on for years if the Senate decides not to hold a trial following an impeachment.
Republicans in the Assembly have introduced a bill to create a nonpartisan redistricting commission. They explained that this bill is an attempt to institute the “Iowa Model” of redistricting in Wisconsin, however this proposal is different from the Iowa Model in significant ways: It does not address Congressional redistricting at all, and lacks the judicial oversight that Iowa uses if the legislature cannot agree to the maps. The Legislative Reference Bureau is a widely respected non-partisan agency which assists legislators with the formal drafting of legislation, as well as detailed legal research and tracking the history of legislative affairs. They would be tasked with composing the maps at the direction of a commission made of appointees from both political parties.
