Performance Evaluator - Entry Level

The Legislative Audit Bureau is an award-winning, nonpartisan legislative service agency whose objective analyses and recommendations help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of state government operations. We are looking for detail-oriented professionals to join our team and contribute to the Bureau’s important mission. The Bureau’s work helps the legislature fulfill its responsibility to provide effective oversight of Wisconsin state government.
In 2024, the Bureau won the Excellence in Evaluation award from the National Legislative Performance Evaluation Society (NLPES), which annually presents the award to an office that made significant contributions to the field of program evaluation over a four-year period of time. In addition, the Bureau has been awarded the Certificate of Impact from NLPES every year for more than a decade. This award is presented annually for evaluations or audit reports that resulted in documented public policy changes, program improvements, dollar savings or other public impacts. The Bureau also received a 2024 Notable Documents Award for two evaluation reports published in 2023.

What Will You Do?
As a performance evaluator:
- You will work collaboratively in teams to analyze complex public programs and policy issues.
- You will plan and conduct challenging qualitative and quantitative analyses, including by considering complex data.
- You will interview state and local government officials.
- You will help draft reports that summarize your analytical results and conclusions.
- You will develop recommendations for improving program efficiency and effectiveness based on audit evidence.
Who Are You?
As a qualified candidate:
- You are able to maintain strict nonpartisanship.
- You have a Bachelor’s degree or higher—preferably in a field related to public policy, public administration, law, political science, economics, business administration, urban and regional planning statistics, or psychology—and have strong academic performance represented by a GPA of 3.2 or higher (registered college seniors may apply, but must graduate prior to starting employment).
In addition, as a well-qualified candidate:
- You have experience in analyzing public policy issues, measuring program effectiveness, and determining and applying appropriate research strategies.
- You are analytical, inquisitive, and possess a strong attention to detail.
- You communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- You are highly motivated, take initiative, and excel in meeting challenges.
- You develop positive working relationships with colleagues.
- You self-reflect and respond to feedback in a positive and constructive manner.
How Do You Join?
We are seeking candidates who are legally authorized to work in the United States and will not require employer visa sponsorship now or in the future. This position is full-time and located on-site at our downtown Madison location. A background check will be conducted on all finalists prior to an offer of employment.
