Madison, WI – Yesterday, Representative Rick Gundrum (R-Slinger) voted for two items of legislation that will reduce taxes and defend taxpayers from future tax hikes. After the floor session, he released the following statement:

“We can’t wait any longer to provide tax relief to Wisconsin’s middle class and retirees. My constituents are calling for tax cuts to help them with current economic and inflationary troubles. I was happy to vote for Assembly Bill 386 because it returns part of Wisconsin’s budget surplus back to the taxpayers. This $2.9 billion tax cut will provide the average filer with a $772 decrease in taxes each year.

“This bill is also transformative because it means Wisconsin residents who are 67 years of age or older can qualify for an income tax exemption on their retirement accounts. It’s time for Wisconsin to provide retirees with a tax-free retirement to incentivize them to stay here rather than relocate to another state. We may not be able to compete with the weather in Arizona, Florida, or Texas, but we can compete with them on tax policy.

“The other tax-related legislation I voted for was Assembly Joint Resolution 66. This is the first consideration of a constitutional amendment to defend taxpayers from future tax increases. Wisconsinites deserve to keep as much as they earn and raising taxes should only be a policy option of last resort. If this constitutional amendment becomes law, then increases on income, sales, or franchise taxes would need to be approved by a two-thirds vote in the Legislature. This ensures that bipartisan consensus will be required for a tax increase to pass.”

A constitutional amendment in Wisconsin must be passed by the State Legislature in two sessions before going to the voters for approval in a referendum.
