Madison, WI – Yesterday, Representative Rick Gundrum (R-Slinger) voted for Assembly Bill 415 to create a nonpartisan redistricting process. The bill is based on the redistricting process used in Iowa. Today, he released the following statement:

“I am proud to vote for a bill that will create a commission to draw legislative maps in accordance with state and federal law. The commission will have equal representation of Republicans and Democrats, who will review legislative districts drawn by the Legislative Reference Bureau. The agency will create fair maps that are uniform in population, contiguous, and compact.

“For years we have heard Democrats, including Governor Evers and many state legislators, talk about the need for nonpartisan redistricting. Some have even said the Iowa model is exactly what is needed in Wisconsin. Yet when the time came to vote for a bill to create a fair redistricting process, many of them decided to vote against it.

“During my time in the Assembly, I have had the pleasure of getting to know Democrats who I respect because while we may disagree, I have always found them to be principled and passionate. That’s why it is disappointing to see so many of them vote against legislation that they previously supported for several years.”
