Madison, WI – Representative Rick Gundrum (R-Slinger) issued the following statement in response to the 2023 State of the State address delivered by Governor Tony Evers:
“Governor Evers loves to talk about all the work he has done for the state, but in truth he is taking credit for the work done by Republicans in the State Legislature. The $6.6 billion surplus and the $1.7 billion in the state’s ‘rainy day fund’ were only possible because of many years of Republican budgeting. If we had followed the proposals of Governor Evers since he took office, then that budget surplus wouldn’t exist and Wisconsinites would be crippled financially by massive tax increases.
“While Governor Evers focuses on an unrealistic wish list of more government spending, my Republican colleagues and I will prioritize the issues that matter the most to Wisconsinites. I plan to work on:
- Addressing rising crime to keep our communities safe
- Reducing the tax burden to support taxpayers and small businesses
- Investing in Wisconsin’s workforce
- Empowering parents and students in our K-12 education system
“I look forward to working with my legislative colleagues in the new session. We have a number of opportunities to improve the quality of life in Wisconsin and make our state the best in the nation.”
