Madison, WI – Rep. Rick Gundrum (R-Slinger) voted today for a veto override of Assembly Bill 336. The bill was vetoed by Governor Tony Evers last month and ends Wisconsin’s participation in the federal unemployment benefit enhancement programs. Rep. Gundrum released the following statement after today’s session:

“If Wisconsin’s economy is to fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, then we must end the additional $300 unemployment enhancement. We have a workforce shortage in many sectors of the economy and we can’t have able-bodied workers remain unemployed while thousands of jobs are available.

“In states that are canceling enhanced unemployment payments, people are leaving unemployment rolls more quickly. We should follow the example of these states. A study from the University of Chicago found that a family of four with two unemployed parents would receive over $59,000 a year in annualized payments under the supplemental unemployment program.

“Last week, I attended the Washington County Fair. During that time, I had the opportunity to talk with food service and commercial vendors. I saw a predicament that is all too common today: HELP WANTED signs. I was informed by many of the vendors that not only are they struggling to find help, but they also have numerous products on back order.

“I came to the Assembly floor today on behalf of those small business owners and their hardworking employees, the heartbeat of Wisconsin’s economy, and delivered their message. Get people back to work now!”
