Madison, WI - Representative Rick Gundrum (R-Slinger) today voted in favor of the 2023-2025 Wisconsin State Budget. After the vote, he released the following statement:
“I am very pleased with the 2023-2025 state budget that the Joint Committee on Finance and Legislature put forward. It promotes fiscal responsibility, while also funding priorities that matter to Wisconsinites.
“The Legislature proposed new spending increases for K-12 public education that amounts to over $1 billion. The new funds allocate $30 million to new mental health programming and $50 million for literacy initiatives that will help Wisconsin students develop proficient reading skills. Additionally, choice and charter schools will see an increase of $80 million.
“I have always believed in the idea that parents should have the right to send their kids to the school of their choice. Hard-working parents pay taxes for education and should have the ability to use those tax dollars however they see fit. This historic increase in choice and charter school funding helps us get closer to achieving that goal.
“The state budget also includes a $4.4 billion tax cut, the largest in state history. Under this proposal, $3.5 billion will be allocated to reducing the state income tax, $622 million in property tax relief, and $173 million to repeal the personal property tax.
“I have always made it a top priority to lessen the tax burden on Wisconsinites. With rising inflation, it is especially important that we return as much excess tax revenue to the hard-working individuals in our state. Thanks to the Republican-led Legislature, all taxpayers will see an average 15.1% reduction in their income tax.”
The bill now goes to Governor Evers’ desk to be signed into law.
