Slinger, WI – Following the first joint public hearing of the Wisconsin Committees on Campaigns and Elections which wrapped up late last Friday, State Representative Rick Gundrum released this statement:
“After listening to extensive testimony during last Friday’s joint hearing in Madison along with my firsthand observations during the Milwaukee County presidential recount last month, it is crystal clear that the legislature needs to reexamine our election laws. We must ensure that all local election officials follow state guidelines in every part of the state. Communication from the Elections Commission needs to be equally administered and adhered to in every zip code. The misconduct reported and witnessed among some of the most populous areas in our state is downright unacceptable.
“It has unfortunately become abundantly clear that many Wisconsinites do not trust our election system. The people of Wisconsin expect and deserve fair elections. We need legislation that holds the Wisconsin Elections Commission accountable so that they comply with state statute. We also need stronger laws to prevent voter fraud, ensure consistency across municipalities, and protect poll observers from bullying at polling locations. There must be enforced consequences for those who do not comply with Wisconsin election law. Law-abiding voters should not be put in this position where they have to wonder if their vote was compromised.
“The people of Wisconsin deserve fair elections. It’s time for the legislature to restore the integrity of the ballot box and make sure that no one’s vote is disenfranchised.”
