Madison, WI – Yesterday Representative Rick Gundrum (R-Slinger) attended the 2023-2025 biennial budget address delivered by Governor Tony Evers. This afternoon he released the following statement:

“Yesterday, Governor Evers could have shown that he would be willing to work with Republicans in the Legislature on a budget that works best for Wisconsinites. Unfortunately, his budget proposal was another massive spending wish list that bloats our bureaucracy and caters to the extreme left.

“His most egregious error is deciding to freeze enrollment for the school choice program. There needs be competition in Wisconsin’s education system. You cannot empower parents and students in our state by limiting educational opportunities.

“Governor Evers is proposing a $1 billion increase in taxes for the third time since he became governor. In the Legislature, my Republican colleagues and I have focused on ways to return more money to the taxpayers, having saved families over $1,600 per year on their income tax bill. I will continue to find ways to cut taxes in the upcoming budget.

“Wisconsin is in a strong financial position thanks to many years of Republican budgeting. This has led to a $7.1 billion surplus and the largest rainy day fund in state history. While Governor Evers has proposed another unrealistic budget, my fellow Republicans and I will take input directly from our constituents to create a biennial budget that truly reflects the interests of Wisconsinites.”
