‘No regard for working families’: Fractured GOP continues futile pursuit
MADISON, Wis. — Today, Republican politicians held a hearing to give a massive tax break to the wealthy at the expense of Wisconsin families and small businesses. Their so-called “flat tax” would decimate our state budget and force massive cuts to public services and public education.
Senator Kelda Roys (D-Madison) issued the following statement:
“Republicans’ dead-on-arrival flat tax scheme is a discredited, fringe proposal that would transfer massive public resources to the wealthiest among us, while starving Wisconsinites of critical public resources and exacerbating our workforce shortage.
“There’s a reason this proposal is backed by radical anti-government billionaires – their aim is to turn Wisconsin into a failed state like Kansas, which defaulted on its loans after their slashing scheme.
“Everyday Wisconsinites don’t want us giving billionaires and big corporations a massive tax giveaway. They want us to attract young people and workers to our state by ensuring affordable childcare, funding our public schools, investing in UW-Systems and technical colleges, affordable housing, modern transportation, healthcare and paid family leave. They want us to decriminalize abortion and cannabis.
“Just like GOP politicians in Washington DC, who are willing to inflict massive harm on the global economy by refusing to raise the debt ceiling to advance their ideological agenda, Wisconsin’s GOP leaders know their bill will bust Wisconsin’s budget and force massive cuts to necessary and popular public services. These Republicans have no regard for working families. Wisconsinites deserve leaders who are willing to work together and govern responsibly, and who focus on making our state a place where people want to work, live, and thrive.”
