Rep. Tony Kurtz and Sen. Howard Marklein Celebrate Passage of Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield Memorial Highway Legislation
MADISON – State Representative Tony Kurtz (R-Wonewoc) and State Senator Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) celebrated the passage of their legislation to establish State Highway 80 as the Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield Memorial Highway today.
Senate Bill (SB) 249 was passed by the State Senate on June 7, 2023 and passed the State Assembly today, November 9, 2023 with bi-partisan support. It is now bound for Governor Tony Evers for signature.
“This is the time of year when we take a moment to recognize, remember and appreciate the veterans in our communities. Thank you to all of the men and women who have served our nation in our armed forces,” Sen. Marklein said. “As the State Senator for the 17th Senate District, I have the privilege of serving nearly 20,000 veterans who have served in the military, including Rep. Tony Kurtz, who spent two decades in the US Army and served during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. I am honored to work with him on this important highway recognition.”
“Historically, Wisconsin has honored its veterans by designating a highway or bridge to be commemorated in their honor. Currently, the state has dedicated highways for veterans of WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Purple Heart recipients. We even have a bridge honoring veterans of the American Revolution,” Rep. Kurtz said. “It is time that we extend the same honor to our veterans of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.”
State Highway 80 begins near Marshfield, WI, entering the 17th Senate District and 50th Assembly District near Finley in northern Juneau County. It extends all of the way to the state line near Hazel Green in southern Grant County.
