2023-2024 Session in Review

During the 2023-2024 legislative session, I am proud to have authored 8 bipartisan bills and coauthored 95 bipartisan bills that were enacted into state law. Read about the highlights of the last session.

I have worked hard to move our state forward on many issues that matter to the people of our district and our state. Below are some of the top priorities I have been working on as your State Senator: 

Building an Economy That Works for Everyone

  • Fully funding our public schools  
  • Raising the minimum wage 
  • Funding the Child Care Counts program to make child care more affordable, support working parents, and keep our economy strong 
  • Legalizing marijuana for responsible adult use 
  • Establishing a paid family and medical leave program to support our workers, their families, and our economy 
  • Improving economic outcomes and mobility for historically disadvantaged and underrepresented communities

Promoting Affordable, Accessible Housing

  • Providing $525 million in state funding to expand access to housing and make home ownership more affordable in Wisconsin 
  • Updating and expanding access to the Homestead Tax Credit, which provides direct tax relief to seniors and those who need it most
  • Helping veterans with service-connected disabilities and their spouses stay in their homes

Investing in Rural Communities and Family Farms

  • Expanding access to rural broadband
  • Strengthening opportunities for beginning farmers 
  • Preserving and protecting our state’s farmland 
  • Encouraging farmer-led conservation practices, including supporting no-till practices and cover crops, rotational grazing livestock, and farmer-led watershed groups
  • Investing in repairs to our rural roads and bridges

Preserving Our Natural Resources and Environment

  • Investing in our state park system and the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program
  • Creating a Green Amendment to our state constitution, protecting our right to a clean, safe, and healthy natural environment 
  • Mitigating the effects of climate change 
  • Giving communities what they need to remediate harmful PFAS pollution 
  • Improving opportunities for hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation

Promoting Affordable Healthcare and Protecting Reproductive Rights

  • Promoting healthcare access by accepting federal funds to expand BadgerCare eligibility
  • Restoring full reproductive freedom and protecting abortion rights by codifying Roe at the state level
  • Enshrining access to birth control as a statutory right
  • Reducing the cost and increasing access to life-saving drugs, like insulin and epinephrine

Advocating for LGBTQ+ Rights

  • Updating our state constitution and statutes to recognize marriage and parental rights for LGBTQ+ families
  • Expanding state non-discrimination laws to prohibit discrimination against transgender and nonbinary Wisconsinites 
  • Prohibiting the practice of conversion therapy on minors

Protecting Our Democracy

  • Implementing fair legislative district maps to allow voters to choose their elected officials
  • Defending our electoral systems from partisan attacks 
  • Working across the aisle to pass bipartisan laws that require clear disclaimers on AI-generated political ads, improve our absentee balloting laws, and close loopholes in our campaign finance system

How You Can Be Involved in the Legislative Process

If you would like to follow along with what is happening in the state legislature, search for individual bills, or see when the legislature will next be in session, you may do so here. You may also share your thoughts by attending lobby days at the Capitol, testifying at public hearings for or against individual bills or the state budget, or attending listening sessions hosted by me or by other elected officials. 

In addition to being involved in the legislative process, one of the most important ways you can be involved in government is by voting. Visit myvote.wi.gov to find out how to register, confirm what is on your ballot, learn how to request an absentee ballot, and learn who represents you at the local, state, and federal level.
