Black History Month-Tell Them We Are Rising Viewing
In honor of Black history month members of the legislative black caucus held a viewing of the documentary ‘Tell Them We Are Rising,’ It was an opportunity to learn about the history of America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). At one time in this nation’s history, African-Americans were not allowed to attend White colleges and universities. Well into the 20th century, these schools were responsible for educating roughly 85% of black college graduates in the country. There are three members of the black caucus that attended HBCU’s. Viewings were offered in both Madison and Milwaukee and if you have not seen the documentary it is available on YouTube.
Black History Month- Living the Legacy of Malcolm X Panel
Senator Lena Taylor participated in a panel discussion that reviewed the legacy of Malcolm X on Thursday. Hosted by the Ma’Ruf Neighborhood Youth Center, the event was a great opportunity to discuss the early life, leadership and revolutionary ideas of this polarizing figure in Black history. He had a profound impact on the Civil Rights movement and the discussion consisted of an inter-generational panel that offered their own take on Malcolm X.
Lancaster Elementary School Visit
Earlier today Senator Taylor spoke to students at Lancaster Elementary about the strength of black women. As a politician, it is important to engage directly with the youth and have them be a part of the dialogue. Because black women have historically faced adversity it is essential that we highlight their triumphs and accomplishments
Intern Spotlight
UW-Madison senior Taylor Friedman is currently interning for Senator Lena Taylor focusing on policy work. Taylor is originally from New York State but she came to Wisconsin based on the academic excellence of the psychology department here at UW. She is currently majoring in Psychology with a certificate in Gender and Women’s Studies. Taylor is inspired by what Lena stands for, and also hopes that through this internship she will gain key knowledge of government systems and how policy is influenced. In her free-time, you can find Taylor baking or with her nose in a book. Taylor is extremely passionate about looking at norms, societal issues, social justice issues, among many others, she hopes that her passions someday help her create systems involving mental health prevention.
Gov. Evers' Press Conference
During the Governor Evers’ press conference that Senator Taylor attended on Thursday, he made a proposal of almost $28 million to be spent towards women’s health and infant care. If approved, this proposal would be a part of the next state budget, and it would be aimed at reopening a flow of funding to Planned Parenthood, improving women’s access to health exams, and addressing racial disparities in maternal and child health. If this proposal is passed, it would decrease the racial disparities of infant and maternal death in the state of Wisconsin.
