Republicans try to push even worse health care bill

Believe it or not, Republicans are trying to push an even WORSE ACA replacement after failing so miserably last time. You’d think that after the American people rejected their effort to take away health insurance from 24 million people, Republicans would have learned their lesson.

They didn’t. This new amendment to Trumpcare would no longer require states to ban preexisting conditions, or cover essential services like maternity care and mental health services. What makes this whole situation even more mind-boggling is that Republicans want their own plans exempt from these new provisions! Republicans clearly like the ACA enough to use it to insure themselves and their staff, but they don’t care enough about their own constituents to ensure that they have coverage, too. That’s hypocrisy at its finest, or shall I say, Republicanism at its finest.

This is all happening because Trump is nearing the 100-day mark in his presidency. He needs to prove to the people who voted for him that they didn’t make a mistake, and that he’s following through on his promises. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want any of Trump’s promises! If you agree, make sure to call your representatives in Congress ASAP and tell them to vote ‘no’ on Trump’s dangerous health care bill! News from House of Horrors Milwaukee County Jail

This week, we learned horrifying news about the death of Terrill Thomas, a man who died behind bars at Milwaukee County Jail. Prosecutors revealed that Mr. Thomas was kept in solitary confinement for seven days without access to water. On the eighth day, he passed away from severe hydration.

I don’t care if you’ve committed a crime. You deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Period. Especially if you have a mental illness. Mr. Thomas was unable to speak yet guards cut off his access to water. This practice is barbaric and inhumane. Mental illness should be treated, not punished.

This is just another example of Sheriff Clarke’s dangerous negligence. Let us not forget that this is the same jail where four people died in the span of 6 months, where a baby died and where pregnant women are shackled during birth. Clarke’s lack of respect and dignity for the people he’s been elected to protect is appalling. He owes the people of Milwaukee better.

Psychologist from Lincoln Hills fired

It seems that every time we hear about Lincoln Hills, something is going wrong. Another psychologist at Lincoln Hills “retired” this winter. Derek Jeremy John was dismissed for failing to see more than 20 persons over three months. While dozens went without help, John was “too busy” to see his patients.

Gov. Walker continues to believe that Lincoln Hills is perfectly fine, and the inmates are being taken care of. We know this isn’t true. I have called for a special session on Lincoln Hills TWICE and have been ignored both times. We need to bring our babies home. Our children need to be taken out of Lincoln Hills and brought closer to home where they will have more support and appropriate, trauma-informed care. The Grow Academy, south of Madison, is doing amazing things for their kids; they are learning entrepreneurial skills that they will be able to use for the rest of their lives. Most importantly, they are being given the ability to heal. Our children are hurting, so why do we keep harming them more? Lincoln Hills time after time proves to be a terrible place for these kids. We must get them out!

Monday's town hall

I am so happy to say that we had over 50 people turn out to our town hall on Monday! We had presentations from Jermaine Reed and YAC on the pipeline from foster care to juvenile corrections, and we heard Robert Miranda speak about lead poisoning in our community. I also gave public testimony on the budget to voice my own concerns, and I took questions from constituents to hear theirs. I felt empowered to see everyone standing up and fighting back against Governor Walker’s irresponsible budget. This energy must be channeled moving forward! Attend town halls, call your representatives in Congress, do what you can to #resist!

Today is Arbor Day!

If I asked you how many trees we cut down every day, what would your guess be? Thousands? Millions? Try billions. Precisely 15 billion. Today, April 28th, is Arbor Day! Arbor Day was first observed in 1872 as a way to honor the role of trees in our lives and communities. Unlike some parts of the world, Wisconsin has been gaining forested acres, not losing. We have more trees than ever before! To keep up the good work, I encourage you to get out and plant a tree, or at the very least be mindful of the resources you use. To have a healthy community, we need a healthy environment. We all have a role in our planet’s future!

 Quote of the Week:

“I always believe that ultimately, if people are paying attention, then we get good government and good leadership. And when we get lazy, as a democracy and civically start taking shortcuts, then it results in bad government and politics.”

-Representative Maxine Waters
