Governor Signs into Law Taylor’s School Closing Notification Bill
(MADISON) Senator Lena C. Taylor (D-Milwaukee) applauded the enactment of a new law by Governor Doyle on Wednesday. The bill, which Taylor authored, was signed by the Governor in a ceremony held in Eau Claire.
“Senate Bill 379 will ensure that increased information and communication is provided to the Department of Public Instruction,” Taylor commented. “SB 379 increases the health and safety of our local schools and ensures that timely communications regarding theses issues are utilized in the community.
Senate Bill 379 requires the a school board, within 24 hours of a school being closed by a local health officer or DHS, or by a school district administrator because of a threat to the health or safety of pupils or school personnel, and within 24 hours of reopening a closed school, to notify the Department of Public Instruction that the school was closed. Taylor authored the act with Rep. Penny Bernard Schaber (D-Appleton).
