Finance Committee approves job creation through investment in UW-Milwaukee

Bill creates or sustains over 3100 jobs, applauds Plale work on legislation

(MADISON) The Joint Finance Committee today approved SB 514 which enumerates three building projects for UW-Milwaukee as a part of the Milwaukee Initiative.  The bill, authored by Sen. Jeff Plale (D-South Milwaukee) who also serves on the State Building Commission, allows the university to proceed immediately with $145 million in construction investments which create or sustain over 3100 jobs.

“Thanks to Senator Plale’s hard work to move this bill forward, Milwaukee will see a huge investment in our research university,” Taylor noted.  “With the construction of the Freshwater Sciences Initiative Research Building, the Kenwood Integrated Research Complex, and the Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Campus acquisition and redevelopment, Milwaukee will benefit from over 3100 jobs that are needed.  I am so proud to be a part of the Milwaukee delegation and vote in favor of this crucial piece of legislation for our university and region.”

The job count is based on the formulas used by the Associated General Contractors of America and includes 1,087 on-site construction jobs, 507 direct and indirect jobs associated with construction supply, and 1.595 jobs created by contractors, suppliers, and service providers purchasing other goods and services.

The committee voted 14-2 to approve the bill with two Republicans objecting.
