State Senator Dora Drake on ‘Safe Haven’ Bill

A Biden-era policy established so-called “protected areas” – like schools, medical facilities, and places of worship – where immigration enforcement was restricted. That way, the guidelines stated, people would be able to access essential services without fear of deportation. President Trump rolled back those guidelines last month as one of his first actions back in the Oval Office. Wisconsin Democrats are now working on a bill to re-establish protected areas in our state.

Some state lawmakers want ‘safe havens’ to stay safe

Several state lawmakers are working on a bill that would keep immigration officers out of “safe havens” throughout Wisconsin.  Their move comes as members of immigrant communities can no longer rely on places to be free from immigration enforcement, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the department that oversees U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. Reversing policy from the Biden administration, ICE officers can detain or arrest people for immigration violations inside churches, schools and hospitals.

‘The time is now to do the job’ Legislative Black Caucus says as it kicks off Black History Month

The Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus kicked off its celebration of Black History Month at the Capitol Tuesday by recognizing the work that many have done to advance Black Wisconsinites and encouraging community advocacy. Lawmakers noted that the celebration comes at a moment when diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives are being targeted by the federal government and their fellow state lawmakers.
