Assembly and Senate Pass Audit Reform

Last week, the Assembly and Senate both passed Senate Bill 27, which modernizes the laws governing the Audit Bureau. As the co-chair of the Audit Committee, I worked hard on this bill and am very pleased that it is now on its way to the Governor's desk to become law. Currently, the laws contain more than 40 requirements for specific audits, some of which are outdated, completed, or do not reflect current priorities.  This bill gives the Audit Committee more flexibility to work with the Audit Bureau on the most important and urgent audits of state agencies as spending concerns are discovered. Governor Walker plans to sign the bill into law tomorrow. For more information, check out my website.

Check Out My New Website

I recently updated my website to a new, user-friendly format. I regularly update my site with news about what's going on in the district and in Madison, so I encourage you to save it as a bookmark and check periodically for the latest information. It's also a great resource if you are planning a visit to the Capitol.

OpenBook Wisconsin to Launch This Week

This week, the Department of Administration will launch a new expenditure disclosure website called OpenBook Wisconsin. This site is part of Governor Walker's ongoing effort to make state government more transparent for the citizens of our state. OpenBook Wisconsin will give the public easy access to state expenditures, from 2008 to the present month. Purchasing information for all transactions that exceed $100 will be posted on the site. This site will be a great tool for government accountability with taxpayer dollars. Check back later this week at the following link when the website goes live: www.openbook.wi.gov.

Next week, beginning March 18, remaining permits for the 2013 spring turkey hunting season will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Designated zones will be sold each day, starting at 10:00 am and continue until the permits are sold out. Of the 234,130 permits available, about 100,000 remain for sale. The fee for leftover turkey permits is $10 for residents, $15 for non-residents and $5 for hunters who are 10 or 11 years old. More information about 2013 turkey permits is available from the Department of Natural Resources.

New System for Receiving AMBER Alerts on Mobile Phones

Attorney General Van Hollen recently announced a new system by which Wisconsinites will receive AMBER alerts on mobile phones. AMBER alerts, which notify the public of child abductions, are distributed to mobile phones via the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) program, operated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Alerts will be broadcast at no cost to all phones in the geographic area where the alert has been issued. For more information about this program, visit the Department of Justice website.
