Rep. Franklin’s Legislation Requiring Schools Notify Parents of Sexual Misconduct Passes Assembly
MADISON – On Thursday, State Representative Benjamin Franklin (R- De Pere) voted for a package of bills focused on enhancing public safety, including his bill, Assembly Bill (AB) 74, which will ensure parents or guardians are promptly notified if their child is a victim of sexual misconduct at school.
“I was proud to see Assembly Bill 74 pass the Assembly on a bipartisan vote and hope to see Governor Evers sign this common-sense legislation into law,” said Rep. Franklin. “As the session progresses, I look forward to continuing to find ways to enhance the safety and well-being of Wisconsinites.”
Under current law, there is no specific timeline for schools to notify parents when their child has been a victim of sexual misconduct. AB 74 establishes clear notification requirements: if a report of sexual misconduct is received during regular school hours, the school must notify parents no later than 5 pm on the same day. If the report is received after instructional hours, parents must be notified by noon the following day. Additionally, for further transparency, the bill requires school boards to provide parents with information on how to access records related to school employee discipline.
“As a parent, I was alarmed to learn notifying parents of sexual misconduct is not already in state statute. I’m proud to have authored Assembly Bill 74 to address this issue.”
