Representative Lisa Subeck: Statement on Special Session

MADISON – Today, Representative Lisa Subeck released the following statement ahead of a special session called by Governor Tony Evers to consider a measure that would allow Wisconsinites the ability to vote on repeal of the state’s criminal ban on abortion on the books since 1849. It is expected that Republican leadership will take no action before gaveling out the special session.

“My Democratic colleagues and I are here today to protect the right of every Wisconsinite to receive safe and legal abortion care. Determining if and when to start a family is one of the most personal decisions that any of us will make, and we should all be able to make these decisions free of interference by politicians.

I am grateful that we have a governor who will fight so relentlessly to overturn Wisconsin’s archaic abortion ban, even in the face of such extremism by the majority party in the legislature. I am proud to stand with Governor Evers in the fight for our reproductive freedom.

The legislature has a responsibility to protect the rights of our citizens. Now, when an unprecedented ruling of the US Supreme Court has rolled back the clock half a century on our fundamental reproductive freedom, Republicans are nowhere to be seen.”

Representative Lisa Subeck has represented the 78th Assembly District since 2015 and serves as the Chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus.
