Rep. Lisa Subeck: Statement on Missed Opportunities by Legislative Republicans

MADISON – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly convenes for potentially the last time for the 2021-2022 legislative biennium. Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) released the following statement.

"The legislature should be using the little time we have left this session to address the needs of Wisconsinites. Instead, the bills before the Assembly today and those from earlier this week further illustrate legislative Republicans putting politics ahead of the people while missing opportunities to deliver on the priorities of the people of Wisconsin.

Republican refusal to at minimum hold public hearings to address clean water, raise wages, increase access to healthcare, consider non-partisan redistricting, or debate common sense gun safety measures, means the voices of Wisconsinites will once again go unheard. The hyper-partisan agenda of Republicans has also stood in the way of investing in our public schools, expanding broadband access, addressing the affordable housing shortage, and implementing meaningful criminal justice reform. Sadly, Republicans are all too willing to sacrifice the needs and priorities of the people of Wisconsin for their political gain.

Democrats have been listening to the voters and are ready to address their priorities and the challenges they face. Governor Evers has called for a Special Session in March to return money from Wisconsin's budget surplus to the taxpayers through surplus refunds. If Republicans fail to act, we will miss a critical opportunity to put money back in the pockets of the hardworking people of this state.

We have the opportunity to do more if only our Republican colleagues will agree to finally put the people of our state ahead of their own political agenda.”

Representative Lisa Subeck has represented the 78th Assembly District since 2015 and serves as vice-chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus.
