Statement on Special Session Bills

January 31, 2018

MADISON – Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison), ranking Democratic member on the Assembly Committee on Public Benefit Reform, issued the following statement ahead of today’s public hearing on special session bills that chip away at the safety net for Wisconsin’s most vulnerable families:

“Too many hardworking families across Wisconsin live paycheck to paycheck and struggle to make ends meet. Instead of helping these families get ahead, the governor proposes chipping away at the very safety net that these families count on when times are tough.

Democrats are committed to getting people to work and breaking down barriers to finding and retaining good, family-supporting jobs. The Governor and Republicans have chosen instead to ram through legislation that only makes life harder for people who are already struggling. Instead of creating new opportunities or increasing wages, this cynical legislation offered by Republicans threatens to take food and housing away from our most vulnerable neighbors.

Governor Walker likes to say there is dignity in work, to which I ask: ‘Where is the dignity in working hard each day but still not being able to put food on the table or a roof over your family’s head?’”
