Today, Assembly Republicans are poised to rush a massive overhaul of Wisconsin’s legislative redistricting process through the chamber. The proposal was introduced less than 48 hours ago and has had no public hearing or any other opportunity for public input. The move comes amid continued threats from Speaker Robin Vos to impeach newly sworn in State Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz. Representative Lisa Subeck released the following statement.

“Robin Vos can’t fool us. This political stunt is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to distract from the Republican crusade to overturn the will of the voters by impeaching and removing a democratically elected Supreme Court Justice before she has even had the chance to rule on a single case.

The Vos-style redistricting bill before us today is not a serious attempt to create a fair redistricting process. It is simply a pathway for Republicans to maintain the status quo with a few extra steps.

Let me be clear: Democrats would welcome the opportunity to come to the table and design a fair and open redistricting process in which Wisconsinites can choose their representatives, not the other way around. However, that is not what was before us today.

Vos and his Republican allies have seen just how unpopular their impeachment threats are, but instead of dropping their scheme to overturn the will of the people, they are yet again putting politics first in their latest attempt to maintain their own power.”

Rep. Subeck has represented the 78th Assembly District since 2015 and serves as Chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus.
