Representative Lisa Subeck Urges Passage of Abortion Rights Preservation Act in Face of Threat to Roe v. Wade

MADISON – Today, the United States Supreme Court indicated it will consider an abortion case stemming from a Mississippi law that bans most abortions after 15 weeks, with the potential to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in the United States. Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) released the following statement in response to the announcement.

“Within the next year, the Supreme Court could turn back the clock on nearly fifty years of safe and legal abortion in the United States, threatening our freedom to make our own reproductive healthcare decisions. Overturning Roe v. Wade would jeopardize the health and lives of Wisconsin women, as our state has an 1849 criminal abortion ban still on the books that would make abortion immediately illegal and subject doctors to felony penalties for providing an abortion.

Abortion is health care, not criminal activity, and should be accessible safely, legally, and without judgment. This is why Sen. Kelda Roys and I introduced the Abortion Rights Preservation Act, which would repeal Wisconsin’s criminal abortion ban and preserve the individual right to make personal reproductive healthcare decisions without interference from politicians.

At this critical moment, our reproductive freedom lies in the hands of the Supreme Court of the United States, a court currently dominated by extreme right-wing, anti-abortion Justices. The time has come to pass the Abortion Rights Preservation Act to guarantee access to safe and legal abortion in Wisconsin, no matter what an extreme, politically motivated court may do.”
