MADISON – Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) released the following statement regarding the release of a draft US Supreme Court ruling that would overturn Roe v. Wade:

“While it appears the Supreme Court stands ready to upend almost 50 years of established precedent, Roe v. Wade remains the law of the land today, and the right to safe, legal, and accessible abortion care remains intact in our state, at least for now. Though not a final ruling, the leaked draft underscores the urgent need for lawmakers at every level of government to step up and codify into law the freedom to make personal reproductive healthcare decisions privately and without interference by politicians.

If Roe v. Wade is overturned, abortion will be illegal in Wisconsin. It is time for Wisconsin to finally pass the Abortion Rights Preservation Act and repeal our 173 year old criminal abortion ban.

Republicans have continually blocked any attempt to repeal Wisconsin’s archaic ban on abortion, and have spent more than a decade passing laws that limit access to reproductive health care. If our hyper-partisan state legislature refuses to stand up for the rights of Wisconsin families, then Congress must step in and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act.

With the Supreme Court poised to set us back 50 years, let us act now before it is too late. Wisconsin needs the Abortion Rights Preservation Act, and America needs the Women’s Health Protection Act, to ensure access to safe and legal abortion no matter what a group of extremists on the Supreme Court may decide.”

Representative Lisa Subeck has represented the 78th Assembly District since 2015 and serves as Chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus.
