Representative Lisa Subeck Questions
Fast-Tracked Proposed Abortion Ban
Republicans play politics with women’s health, taking options away from pregnant women in medical crisis
July 9, 2015
MADISON –Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) released the following statement as the Assembly takes up SB179 in a special session.
“Republicans are playing politics with women’s health, inserting themselves into decisions that should be made privately between a woman and her doctor. We must protect a woman’s freedom to make her own health care decisions without interference from politicians.
We know that less than 1% of all abortions take place after 20 weeks in Wisconsin. Women who seek abortions at this time in their pregnancies are generally women who face serious and life-threatening health problems, untenable pregnancies, or severe fetal anomalies.
It is unconscionable that Republicans are using a special session to consider this legislation that would take medical options away from these most vulnerable women and families. However, Governor Walker has made it clear that he wants to sign this legislation as he prepares to officially launch his campaign for the GOP presidential nomination, so Republicans have chosen to play politics with women’s health in their effort to boost the Governor’s credentials with the extreme right wing.”
