Justice Can’t Wait: Representative Subeck Decries Republican Delays to Justice Reform Package

MADISON – Today, Republicans refused to take action on Governor Evers special session on justice reform and policing. Representative Subeck (D-Madison) released the following statement on this failure to govern:

“The nation’s eyes are on Wisconsin as we wrestle with the shooting of Jacob Blake by a Kenosha police officer. At a time when justice cannot wait, Republicans sit on their hands and again refuse to act. Their refusal today to convene any meaningful session on justice reform and policing delays justice and leaves in place the conditions of systemic racism that have plagued us far too long.

Democrats have proposed nine common-sense proposals, outlined in Governor Evers’s call for Special Session, to address justice reform and policing as a much needed first step in addressing systemic injustice. Our communities are demanding change, justice, and an end to police violence against black people, yet Republican leadership refuses to act, making it crystal clear that the people are not a priority for the majority party.

In the face of multiple crises, Wisconsin needs legislative action now more than ever. It is time Republicans stop standing in the way of progress, as the time for action is now. Black lives matter, and justice for all simply cannot wait.”
