STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) -- Katrina Shankland, State Representative of the 71st Assembly District, has been appointed to the Wisconsin Environmental Education Board (WEEB).

Rep. Shankland says the WEEB does a lot of great things for schools.

She said, "It educates our kids not only about sustainability, renewable energy, energy efficiency, but also about critical industries in Wisconsin. And so, I really think it's important that our kids not only understand Wisconsin's outdoors and natural resources but also their relationship to it."

Rep. Shankland also says WEEB is so important because it allows schools to do many non-traditional classroom activities.

"A lot of the school forests across the state get WEEB grants," said Shankland. "Some gardens at schools, for example, get WEEB grants. But also, some schools have used WEEB funds for things like taking kids who have never been fishing before outdoors."

Gov. Scott Walker eliminated the WEEB from his 2015-17 budget meaning the board will be eliminated June 30th, 2017. Shankland says she will know more about the board's plans going forward when she attends her first meeting next week.
