Rep. Shankland on Upcoming Town Hall at UWSP

STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) -- State Representative Katrina Shankland has announced that she will be holding a town hall meeting on the campus of UW-Stevens Point after the university announced it would be cutting some majors.

Rep. Shankland says she wants to hear from people personally on how these cuts will effect them.

"Whether it's their job, their job prospects, maybe it'll effect the workforce. I've already heard from people who have reached out and saw my statement on this issue and I really want to hear more from them so I can be better informed and advocate for them in Madison when it comes time to fund our university system," she said.

Rep. Shankland says she also believes this problem could've been prevented.

"If we would've funded universities sooner we wouldn't have these cuts and it's pretty simple," said Shankland. "These are a result of Republican budget cuts and we need to prevent those from happening in the future and actually fund the university system fairly."

Rep. Shankland says she plans on asking the university to reconsider and that she's spoken with a few people who believe this move may be counter productive and actually cause a decrease in enrollment.

Shankland will be co-hosting the town hall with the UW-Stevens Point Student Government Association. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 13th from 4:30-6pm at the Dreyfus University Center and is open to the public.
