Governor Evers’ Fail to Grasp Wisconsin’s True Struggles
Rep. Nedweski Responds to SOTS Address
Madison – Governor Tony Evers gave his State of the State address last night in the Assembly Chambers, addressing the issues he believes Wisconsinites are facing.
“While I share the Governor’s passion for some of the issues,” Rep. Nedweski said “I disagree with his priorities and his approach in addressing these problems.”
“Republicans have passed multiple pieces of legislation to improve reading readiness, literacy rates, financial literacy, and math skills, all of which have been met with the Governor’s veto—further proving that his actions ring hollow in light of his rhetoric. If the governor is truly concerned with the education of our children, he would support expanding school choice, raising academic standards, and holding schools accountable for outcomes.”
“In addition to his misleading speech on education, his proposals to attract and retain talent also fall flat. Government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers and favoring some businesses over others. Republicans believe in creating an environment where different career paths are made readily available for all people, not just some. I will continue to work cooperatively with those who are willing to invest in building a more dynamic workforce in Wisconsin.”
“The Governor's rejection of the Republican proposal for a flat tax further shows his disconnect with the private sector. Lower taxes, especially for businesses, will help attract talent to our state. There are also a considerable incentives for new businesses to set up shop in Wisconsin. If he was serious about the Wisconsin workforce, Governor Evers would be willing to engage with the legislature—something he has repeatedly refused to do.”
“Overall, I believe it is possible to find areas in which the executive and legislative branch can successfully collaborate. Wisconsin has a significant workforce shortage, and by raising our educational standards we will ensure our workforce remains robust and competitive in the future. Despite the partisan tone of his address, I hope the Governor sees this new legislative session as an opportunity to take a fresh approach in working together with Republicans.”
