This week in the Assembly:
Workforce Development, OWI Reduction |
This week's floor session activity focused on workforce
development and reducing substance impairment driving in
Wisconsin.
The workforce bills will expand worker training programs so
people can get the skills they need to secure a solid job.
Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development data shows that
employers often find it difficult to fill skilled technical
positions due to a lack of qualified candidates.
The bill package, which passed with broad bipartisan support,
will help better match workers and job opportunities. Unemployed
workers will get temporary, on the job training, to keep their
skills fresh, and grant funding and scholarships were offered to
help defray some of the costs of technical education and
apprenticeship programs.
We also passed three bills aimed at reducing OWI (operating
while intoxicated) driving. OWI offenses include operating a
vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant, as well us
operating with a prohibited blood alcohol level. Assembly Bill
67 requires someone accused of first offense OWI to physically
appear in court to enter their plea. Assembly Bill 68 holds
repeat OWI drivers accountable, regardless of how long ago their
previous offense(s) occurred. AB 467 expressly prohibits someone
who must abide by an ignition interlock order from operating a
vehicle without an ignition interlock. |
Beatrice Murphy honored in
the State Assembly |
My wonderful mom turned 100 on October 23rd this year, and I am
so pleased I was able introduce her (and my brothers Marv and
Jerry) to my colleagues during an Assembly session day. After I
introduced mom, the Assembly sang Happy Birthday to her. What a
terrific day!

2013-2014 BLUE BOOKS are still available! The Wisconsin Blue Book is published in
odd years, and details the current members of the
legislature, our federal representatives, the governor,
the Wisconsin Constitution, courts, and all state agencies, councils and boards. The Blue
Book is available online at:
2011-2012 Wisconsin Blue Book Home Page. Please
contact my office if you'd like a hard copy at no charge.
I live in Greenville, but have an
office at the State Capitol in Madison. If you are in
downtown Madison, please feel free to stop by and say
hello! Just go to the information desk in the rotunda,
and they can direct you on how to find my office, 304
North. At the bottom of each e-news, you'll see my
office contact information.
If your school or group plans to tour the Capitol
building, please let me know. I'd
love to visit with you for a few minutes and take a
group photo.
Remember, anyone can watch the Assembly in session (and
most committee meetings, as well) through
WisconsinEye.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve you. |
