Urban Milwaukee: Bill Lets Some Criminal Records Be Expunged

Rep. Goyke’s bill gets bipartisan support, allows retroactive expungement of youthful convictions

As you know I am co-authoring a very important piece of legislation with my colleague, State Rep. David Steffen (R-Green Bay), that is a comprehensive reform to Wisconsin's expungement law and an important step in connecting employers in need with potential employees who are looking to overcome their past and find success in the workforce. The work on Assembly Bill 331 continues to advance during this fall's legislative session.

Not Enumerating I-94 East-West Provides Wisconsin the Opportunity to Get it Right

Throughout the last two budget cycles I have joined my colleague Rep. Daniel Riemer in working with our majority party colleagues to not see the current expansion plan for the I-94 East-West Corridor proceed.

I am proud to say that on September 5th it was announced the Wisconsin State Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee will not enumerate the I-94 East-West Corridor Project, which cuts through the 7th and 18th Assembly Districts.

The Department of Transportation’s proposal to spend in excess of $1.1 billion to expand 3.5 miles of freeway was too high of a price tag and many of our neighbors feared losing homes and property.

The I-94 East-West freeway needs to be fixed. However, this can be done for approximately $400 million. The less costly plan spares neighbors the loss of homes, and opens up additional resources for local road repair without the threat of a tax increase. We continue to stand ready to work with DOT, neighbors, and local businesses to fix I-94 East-West in a smart way that doesn’t waste hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars or disrupt the neighborhoods where we live and work.

Rep. Goyke Leads New Democratic Outreach Initiative

Southeast Wisconsin legislators visit area businesses and agricultural operations

Rep. Goyke and colleagues visiting Marieke Gouda in Thorp

On Thursday, August 24, I lead the first round of outreach by my colleagues and I to communities in parts of Wisconsin we do not represent in the legislature. On this day we visited Clark County to meet residents and learn what matters to them. Joining me were Rep. Daniel Riemer (D-Milwaukee) and Rep. Peter Barca (D-Kenosha).

As legislators from Southeast Wisconsin, we recognize the importance of visiting communities very different from our own. We wanted to learn about the opportunities and challenges facing folks in every part of our state.

In the morning we visited Stanley and toured Stanley Correctional Institution. There we met employees who work at the facility who are committed to serving our correctional system and keeping our communities safe. In the afternoon, we visited Thorp and spoke with local business owners at Marieke Gouda, Thorp Equipment, and Wisconsin Bench Manufacturing. They told us about their concerns connecting to Wisconsin-based suppliers and capital for business improvements.

Rep. Goyke and Rep. Jarchow Complete Legislative Exchange

In January I welcomed Rep. Jarchow to Milwaukee and opened the doors of my home and our district to facilitate stronger bi-partisan communication and collaboration. On August 23rd I visited Rep. Jarchow's legislative district in northwest Wisconsin in a continuation of that effort. We visited local businesses and toured the district. I also enjoyed spending time with Rep. Jarchow and his family.

As I stated earlier this year, our districts are 300 miles apart - and Rep. Jarchow and I may be even farther apart politically - but as different as our communities and politics are, we acknowledge that what happens in the 18th Assembly district matters to the 28th Assembly District and vice versa. Our state is only strong when every corner, every community is thriving.

Sherman Park Revival Celebration

On August 20th I was proud to join my fellow neighbors, community members, local leaders, and businesses in Sherman Park to honor the progress made over the last year, as well as re-dedication to the work that needs to be done.

We also recognized the many families and children that live in the area with the start of the new school year.

Sherman Park is a beautiful neighborhood filled with vibrant people who are dedicated members of our community. We will all continue to work alongside one another to build a bright future.
