Forward Fridays

Hello!

Here we are in our third week of our E-update! Each week we catch you up on what I've done in the past week as your State Representative.

As always, feel free to reach out to my office with any questions or concerns you have.

Forward together!

The State of the Tribes

2019 State of the Tribes Address -105.JPG (1)On Tuesday was the State of the Tribes address. The Oneida Chairman, Tehassi Hill, spoke of Native American contributions to the state of Wisconsin and policies that would strengthen their communities. The main topics he focused on were tribal history and culture, environmental protections, health disparities, and substance abuse. I was honored to attend this address, and look forward to working in partnership with Wisconsin's tribal nations to address these issues and strengthen our communities.

Legislative Session

Following the State of the Tribes address, the State Assembly met for a fast-paced legislative session. We passed 24 bills and resolutions, and also honored our winning sports teams and influential individuals -- including the Wisconsin National Guard the UW-Madison Women's Hockey team.

Session 040919-01.JPGHere I am with my fellow legislators -- Rep. Melissa Sargent, Rep. Chris Taylor, Rep. Samantha Kerkman, and Rep. Shelia Stubbs.

Committee on Children & Families

On Wednesday morning, the Assembly Committee on Children and Families met for an Executive Session. In this session, we unanimously passed the Safe Harbor bill (Assembly Bill 41)! This bill protects minors from being charged with prostitution, which is a step in the right direction in order to combat child sex trafficking.

We also passed Assembly Bill 52, which allows unaccompanied 17-year-olds to be admitted into homeless and other housing shelters. These bills are now headed to the Assembly Floor for a vote by the entire State Assembly.

JFC Hearing in Oak Creek

JFC Oak Creek.jpgAfter the exciting (and quick!) Executive Session on Wednesday, I joined the Joint Finance Committee Hearing in Oak Creek. It was packed! At this hearing, I listened as constituents gave testimony on budget-related issues that were important to them. Many spoke in support of The People's Budget -- specifically education funding, Medicaid expansion, school breakfast programs, nonpartisan redistricting, among many other topics.

JFC Oak Creek 4-10-19.jpgThank you to everyone who provided testimony -- your voice matters!

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity 4-11-19.jpgOn Thursday, many of us came together at Bader Philanthropies in collaboration with Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity and the Medical Society of Milwaukee County to hear Dr. Sandel, a brilliant pediatrician from Boston (same size as MKE!), who shared some innovative ideas she’d like to see normalized so we can solve the intersection of the housing and health crises. Interestingly, education is also related, and as we look at funding, go figure- the intersection of these three areas (& related costs) is important to examine. Thank you Dr. Sandel for your insight!

19th Amendment Ratification Committee  041119 EO19 #54.jpg

On Thursday afternoon, I went back to Madison and was honored to join my fellow women elected officials, and First Lady Kathy Evers, for the Governor's Executive Order #19 -- to form a committee that will serve as an important effort to educate folks and celebrate women's suffrage in Wisconsin.

Flashback Friday: Celebrating UWM

UWM R1 Celebration.jpg (1)LAST Friday, I celebrated UW-Milwaukee for its status as an R1 Institution, one of the top research universities in the country. So much hard work went into this achievement, and it is certainly something to be proud of. Go Panthers!
