Wisconsin Merit Scholarship Passes Assembly

Proven program grants merit-based scholarships to WI residents.

MADISON - Representative Tom Michalski (R-Brookfield) announced that AB 67 has passed the State Assembly on a unanimous 96-0 vote as of yesterday afternoon.  Spearheaded by Rep. Tyler August and Rep. Chanz Green, the bill ensures the successful Wisconsin Merit Scholarship program proceeds into the future.  The scholarships are based solely on merit to Wisconsin residents who are attending UW System schools, and provides them with $5,000.

The program has benefitted nearly 300 freshmen with $1.5 million in scholarships since its creation in 2018.  The scholarship awards students based on high school GPA and ACT scores, providing them the ability to go to any UW school across the state.

“Once students leave Wisconsin, it becomes very difficult to get them back here.” explained Michalski.  “This will help to maintain our UW system as an academic leader and retain more of the students once they have graduated.”

The program does not use general fund tax dollars, instead utilizing revenue from a segregated trust account known as the Normal School Fund (NSF).

The bill will now go to the State Senate for its consideration, where companion legislation is authored by Senator Steve Nass (R-Whitewater).
