Representative Michalski’s Bill Passes the Assembly

A bill aimed to reduce gun violence passes with Republican support

MADISON - Representative Tom Michalski (R-Brookfield) had his first authored bill (AB-58) passed by the Assembly.  The vote totaled 62-35, with the only opposition coming from Democrats.  This bill will create a mandatory minimum of 5 years and a maximum of 7.5 for any violent felon found carrying a firearm.

Representative Michalski expressed his disappointment, “Democrats always argue for gun control whenever there is a shooting.  They had an opportunity today to help make the streets safer and reduce gun violence.  However, when given the chance to do so, all of them voted against a commonsense bill that would protect our citizens from those most likely to use the weapons in violent acts.  On top of that, they decided to ambush us with an amendment completely changing the scope of the bill to suit their agenda.”

Democrats attempted to introduce an amendment while the bill was on the floor which would have added background checks to private online gun sales.  Democrats attempted to thrust this into a bill without any prior warning merely to score political points.

AB-58 will now be taken up by the Senate.  Providing it passes the Senate, it will be brought to Governor Evers’ desk.
