Rep. Michalski Responds to Governor Evers’ Budget
Madison – After listening to Governor Tony Evers’ budget request, Rep. Tom Michalski (R- District 13) expressed disappointment with Governor Tony Evers’ budget request to the Wisconsin State Legislature and issued the following statement:
“While campaigning, the governor repeatedly talked about working with the legislature. He isn’t trying to work with Republicans. Over the past two weeks, I heard more about his budget requests through the news than through legislative channels,” said Rep. Michalski. “The Governor seems to be more concerned with a Democrat wish list, not reaching across the aisle and working with us.”
“We’ve all read about Wisconsin’s estimated seven billion dollar surplus. By my count, the Governor wants to spend over 20 billion on new or expanded programs. Wisconsin’s current strong fiscal position is because of past Republican budgeting decisions. I believe the Republicans in the Assembly are committed to investing state resources into programs that are working, defunding the ones that are not, fixing what is broken, and not creating new programs we can’t afford.”
As state law requires, the Governor’s request has been introduced by the state’s budgeting-writing committee, the Joint Committee on Finance. The committee will soon hold listening sessions around the state to gather citizen input.
“I’m planning several in-district listening sessions on the budget over the coming weeks. I look forward to hearing from my constituents about the ideas that Governor Evers has presented to us,” said Rep. Michalski.
