Rep. Michalski receives WTCS Legislative Leadership Award

Representative Michalski was honored on Friday

 

Pewaukee - Representative Tom Michalski (R-Brookfield) received his first award for his work in the State Assembly on Friday, October 27th, 2023.  Presented by the Wisconsin Technical College District Boards Association (DBA), the award honors a legislator whose support of technical education in Wisconsin is consistent and noteworthy on a variety of legislative issues related to the system and the students it serves. 

 

            Representative Michalski serves on the board of Waukesha Technical College and is a member of the Committee on Colleges and Universities.  He has become known through the Assembly as a strong supporter of the technical colleges, helping to steer the course with some bills both authored and co-sponsored.  Layla Merrifield, the Executive Director of DBA notes that, “His [Representative Michalski’s] willingness to dive into technical college issues as a freshman lawmaker has been extraordinary”.  She cited his efforts authoring Assembly Bill 549, which provides $17 million to the technical colleges for improvements to manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, and truck driver training along with hiring and retention bonuses for instructors in these fields.

           

            During acceptance of this award, Representative Michalski explained his belief in the value of our technical colleges, saying, “While serving in local Government, I became aware of how vital workforce development is to the local economy… I’m not telling you anything new when I say Tech Colleges' impact on the business community is direct and almost immediate”.  He then reaffirmed his commitment to the technical colleges, “I can assure you that I am and will continue to be a champion for a strong Tech College System. A system whose individual units remain directly answerable to the community they serve”.
