Woman’s portrait to appear on the $10 bill

http://legis.wisconsin.gov/eupdates/sen04/061915/$10%20bill%20woman.jpgThe Treasury announced that a portrait of a woman will appear on the $10 bill. I believe this is a big step for women’s equality. The Treasury is looking for a woman “who was a champion for our inclusive democracy.” Faces on the bills have not changed since 1929, when Andrew Jackson replaced Grover Cleveland on the $20 note. To cast your vote, the Treasury has invited the public to use the hashtag #TheNew10 on Twitter to spread the word about the redesign. Casting your vote via a Twitter hashtag is a great opportunity to show your support for the face of a woman on a paper bill. Who do you think should be the face of the new $10 bill? #TheNew10

State budget stalled

http://legis.wisconsin.gov/eupdates/sen04/061915/delays%20expected.jpgThe state budget delay should come as no surprise. Governor Walker's budget is so bad that even his own party doesn't want to vote for it. Despite our state budget growth of $10 billion during Walker's tenure, Republicans can't seem to find the funding to invest in our public schools, our UW System or our economy, let alone the people who've been hardest hit by the Walker economy. As a longtime member of the state budget committee, I've never seen one quite like this. Just a few short weeks ago, we thought the budget was almost done. Yet, Republicans can't seem to get agreement amongst themselves about taxes, transportation, the Buck's arena and prevailing wage. One thing is for sure, the longer they huddle behind closed doors, the worse it will be for Wisconsin.

Juneteenth Celebrationhttp://legis.wisconsin.gov/eupdates/sen04/061915/Juneteenth%20pic%20with%20man%20on%20parade%20route.jpg

Last week marked the 150th Juneteenth Celebration. This year marked the first ever inaugural walk to benefit Sickle Cell disease, which raised $5,000 and will be matched with another $5,000 by the Milwaukee Brewers Community Foundation. Sickle cell disease is a blood disease which effects a significant number of our African-American population, including almost 1,000 people in the state of Wisconsin with 400 being in southeastern Wisconsin. The weather for the event was great and I had a great time walking in the parade with my team and visiting with so many constituents at the event Friday afternoon.

Milwaukee Senate Democrats demand invite to Bucks Arena discussions

http://legis.wisconsin.gov/eupdates/sen04/061915/150408-arena-plaza-full.jpgThe Milwaukee Bucks Arena isn't just about keeping an NBA team in Wisconsin. The Bucks mean big bucks for our economy. Income tax revenue from player salaries will total over $400 million throughout the next 20 years. With budget negotiations stalled amongst Republicans, Democrats may finally get a seat at the table soon. Last week, Senators Harris Dodd, Larson and I issued a letter to Republican leadership calling for a seat at the negotiation table. After being shut out of the negotiations up to this point, we hope to soon be a part of the negotiations. Since day one, it has been important for me to help find a way to keep the Bucks in Milwaukee while ensuring a fair deal for Milwaukee and Wisconsin. Stay tuned, as this story continues to evolve.

Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free. – Jim Morrison
