Madison, WI - Representative Rick Gundrum (R-Slinger) today voted in favor of Assembly Bill 109, which will help ensure students expand their knowledge of personal financial literacy by requiring at least one-half credit of the subject for high school graduation. After passage of the bill, he released the following statement:

“It is crucial we set our students up for financial success as they pursue post-high school education, enter the workforce, and become responsible taxpayers. We need to stress the importance of growing personal savings, balancing a budget, investing, managing loans, and understanding many other financial topics to our students.

“Most working adults struggle to even keep a personal budget. More than half of Wisconsin residents are living paycheck-to-paycheck. Many of these challenges could have been circumvented if they had a basic understanding of financial literacy from an early age. By requiring a base-level understanding of financial topics while in school, we can help future generations avoid many of these issues. If this bill is signed into law, Wisconsin will join a growing number of states that require all high school students to take a personal finance course.

“I am proud to vote for this bill and I am happy to see that it has tremendous bipartisan support. It will ensure our students have the financial tools necessary to succeed in their adult lives.”
