Welcome to Rep. Krug’s E-Update

Krug believes in Truth in Sentencing

State Representative Scott Krug co authored legislation that will repeal former Governor Jim Doyle’s Early Release program.

“With my background in law enforcement, I was shocked at the utter disregard the 2009-2011 budget policy item (aka “Early Release”) had for the public safety,” states Krug.  “The public was denied the opportunity to give input on this part of the bill because it was shoved through within 24 hours. I feel now I can right that wrong. "The Early Release program allows convicted criminals – including felons to significantly reduce their sentences through good behavior.

The program also took authority away from the judges who oversee our judicial system and left their fate to political appointees under former Gov. Doyle and government bureaucrats.

“Holding criminals accountable for their actions is right for the safety of Wisconsin,” states Krug.  “Allowing criminals to be released early is sending a very dangerous message and I want it stopped.”

Photo ID and Constitutional/Conceal Carry Gun Bills

Photo ID

Assembly Bill 7, commonly known as the Photo ID bill will be brought before the Assembly in the next couple of weeks.  I believe the Photo ID legislation is necessary in Wisconsin.  The state Department of Justice and Milwaukee County district attorney's office have prosecuted 20 cases of voter fraud from the November 2008 election. One case of fraud is one case too many in my opinion.

In a day and age when we can’t even go to the video store to rent a movie without presenting ID, asking to present ID at your local polling place is not too much to ask.

Now remember this bill is in its infancy and will be going through committees.  The Assembly committee agreed to allow IDs issued by accredited public and private universities and colleges in Wisconsin if they included a photo, signature, current address and date of birth. The IDs could be used only if they expired within four years of the election.

In addition to certain student IDs, also eligible for voting purposes would be Wisconsin driver's licenses, state-issued ID cards, military IDs, passports, naturalization certificates or IDs issued by Native American tribes based in Wisconsin. The state Department of Transportation would provide free IDs - but not driver's licenses - to those who asked for them, a provision included in the bill to ensure the ID requirement did not amount to an unconstitutional poll tax.

Constitutional/Conceal Carry Gun bills

My office has been receiving a lot of correspondence regarding legislation for constitutional/concealed carry.  Throughout my short time in the legislature, I have valued the opinions and concerns of the people in the 72nd District.

A little background on this legislation is in the United States of America, only 2 states (Illinois and Wisconsin) and the District of Columbia do not provide their citizens the ability to carry concealed weapons.

It has been statistically demonstrated that crime goes down in a correlation with an increase in the ability and actual number of citizens who can and do carry concealed weapons.

Two forms of legislation providing a RIGHT TO CARRY to enable Wisconsin citizens to carry concealed weapons.

I am reading both to bills to ascertain which is best, in theory I do believe in constitutional carry.
