Shilling Joins Local Leaders on Broadband Roundtable
VIROQUA, WI – Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse), Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection Secretary Brad Pfaff and Public Service Commission Chair Rebecca Valcq joined local leaders for a roundtable discussion on the importance of broadband at Vernon Communications. The discussion highlighted Governor Evers’ budget proposal which makes historic investments in high-speed broadband infrastructure, and reduces onerous requirements that make it difficult for municipalities to directly invest in broadband infrastructure.
“High speed broadband is a critical component of economic growth for many family farms and small businesses in the Driftless Region,” said Shilling. “Investing in rural broadband projects can help close the digital divide, create new jobs, and open up small communities to an abundance of new opportunities. Governor Evers’ budget proposal is vital to ensuring Wisconsin can be competitive in an economy increasingly reliant on broadband infrastructure.”
The discussion also focused on the importance of broadband connectivity for public safety as well as the need for accurate mapping of access and creative public private partnerships for funding and grant applications.
