Democratic Leaders on SCOTUS Gerrymandering Decision

MADISON, WI – Today, a conservative majority on the Supreme Court of the United States issued a 5-4 split decision which held that partisan gerrymandering claims present political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts. Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) and Assembly Democratic Leader Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh) released the following statements on the ruling:

“Democrats believe every voter deserves to have their voice heard,” Sen. Shilling said. “Republican efforts to suppress voters, restrict voting rights and rig elections through gerrymandered maps have undermined the will of the people. Democrats will continue to champion non-partisan redistricting reform to empower citizens and restore fairness to our election process.”

“Wisconsin’s heavily gerrymandering maps have created a complete lack of accountability for Republican legislators. The numbers confirm that Republicans have built an impenetrable electoral wall around themselves with no consequences for their actions,” stated Rep. Hintz. “Today’s SCOTUS decision benefits politicians, not the people of Wisconsin. It is clear we need a non-partisan solution in Wisconsin to rein in politically motivated Republican legislators who will stop at nothing to maintain their hold on power.”
