Area Legislators & Building Commission Higher Education chair to Tour UW-Eau Claire Phillips Science Hall
MADISON – Senator Jeff Smith (D-Brunswick), Representative Jodi Emerson (D-Eau Claire) and Representative Jill Billings (D-La Crosse) will tour the UW-Eau Claire Phillips Science Hall on Friday, May 3rd. Rep. Jill Billings, chair of the Building Commission’s higher education subcommittee, is traveling to Eau Claire, as part of several stops at UW-System schools to better understand the infrastructure needs on each campus. Following the tour and press conference, local legislators will hold a roundtable discussion with UW-Eau Claire faculty and students.
The tour and press conference is part of the ongoing discussion about the state capital budget. In an unprecedented move at the State Building Commission meeting in March, Republicans on the commission voted against all projects in Governor Evers’ proposed capital budget. Therefore, no capital budget recommendations from the Building Commission moved forward to the Joint Finance Committee (JFC). The action by the Republicans on the committee leaves all capital budget projects, including the UW-Eau Claire Science project to replace Phillips Hall, with an uncertain future as budget deliberations begin.
The tour and group discussion is an opportunity for local legislators to learn about the particular need for an updated facility directly from the administration, faculty and students.
