Statewide Tour Promoting Medical Marijuana Bills

Public Should Know that Committee Chairs are Holding Up Medical Marijuana

Madison - Representative Chris Taylor (D-Madison) and Senator Jon Erpenbach (D-Middleton), joined by advocates, have embarked on a statewide media tour seeking Legislative action on Senate Bill 38/Assembly Bill 75. The bills allow for limited use of medical cannabis for those with specific, serious, and debilitating conditions, with physician approval. The bills were introduced in February of this year and have been stalled in legislative committees, despite repeated requests for a public hearing from the bill authors to allow Wisconsinites to weigh in.

“People are suffering with serious medical conditions that could potentially benefit from medical marijuana and they do not even receive the dignity of concern and empathy from this Republican controlled Legislature. Committee chairs are specifically holding up action on these bills because of their personal beliefs despite public opinion which overwhelmingly supports allowing individuals the opportunity to medicine that can work for them,” said Senator Erpenbach.

The bills are tightly crafted and only allow legal use of marijuana for patients suffering from a debilitating illness when their physician approves. Both Erpenbach and Taylor say that political games have meant the bills have not even received a Legislative public hearing in either house, despite national polling showing 89% support allowing medical use. The events will close next week with a public forum on the proposals hosted by the bill authors in Milwaukee.

“These bills are about addressing human suffering and allowing really sick people to legally access medication that could really help them. It is just heartbreaking that Republican committee chairs are turning their backs on these patients and families and refuse to even allow a public hearing on this issue. So, we’re taking the issue to the people and urging them to raise their voices,” said Representative Chris Taylor.

Joining Senator Jon Erpenbach and Representative Chris Taylor on the statewide media tour will be community advocates that are affected by Wisconsin’s ban on medical use of marijuana. Currently 29 states, including our neighbors Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan having legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes - it is time for Wisconsin to act.
