Democrats oppose veteran service cuts
Lawmakers question move by Walker Administration to restrict access
MADISON, WI – After Gov. Walker’s Dept. of Veteran Affairs Secretary announced another move toward regionalizing and consolidating County Veteran Service Offices (CVSOs), Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) released the following statement:
“Veterans and military families overwhelmingly opposed closing local CVSO offices when it was proposed by Republican lawmakers earlier this year. It was a bad idea then and it’s still a bad idea. Veterans – especially those who are elderly or disabled – shouldn't have to drive hours to access basic services.
“Local CVSOs do an outstanding job of helping veterans access health care benefits, worker training, employment assistance and other important resources. It’s time to stop cutting corners with veterans funding in our state.
“Rather than giving more tax breaks to the wealthy, we need to make sure that veterans have access to the services and benefits they’ve earned. Democrats are committed to protecting Wisconsin veterans and we will continue to defend their ability to access benefits through local CVSOs.”
